Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Yamaha 1100, yamaha xs 1100, vacuum lines

Question
hey Chris, I have a 1981 yamaha xs 1100 ,and Im having a problem with all the lines that are under the tank. It has 2 gas spouts 1 on each side. 1 gas line and 1( i guess vent line) per side all of which run to the octopus , my question is can I change this set up , and put just a single gas line per side and get rid of the octopus. If so what can I get the spouts off of ? thanks a lot for any help you have . Andy

Answer
Hi Andy.
The answer to your question is no, you cannot remove one of those lines.  They are not vent lines, but vacuum lines.  Without them, the fuel valve does not open and you get no fuel to the engine.  If you try to remove one or both to put in "constant on" type valves, then the bike will flood out.  I'm afraid that you are stuck with the configuration that you have.

Ride safe.
