Motorcycle Repair: 1989 honda shadow 1100, stator coil, honda shadow

Question
I had last ran my bike about 6-8 wks ago.  Had to use a battery charger though.  Last wkend I tried to crank but no good.  Not even with battery charger.  Local Auto Zone said the battery checking good.  Finally broke down and bought a new battery.  After charging for a few minutes, the bike cranked right up.  Let run for a few minutes and tried to crank again.  Only got clicking sound in the area of the cellnoid (sp).  This had also happened previously.  Thoughts?

Answer
Hi James.
Have you checked the charging system?

First thing you do is check the charging system wiring for shorts.  Do this both visually and with a multimeter.

Get the battery fully charged again and start the bike.

Check to see what the battery is charging at.  It should be 13-15VDC.  If it is less, then the problem is your stator coil.  Replace it.

What you have sounds exactly like a charging system problem. Usually, the problem ends up being the stator coil, but considering the age of the bike, it could be the wiring as well.

Good luck.
