Motorcycle Repair: No start, suzuki gsx 250, intents and purposes

Question
G'day Chris

I just bought a 1996 Suzuki GSX 250 Across.

It wont run.

When you crank it over, it will run for a sec and then stop. It's getting plenty of fuel (I checked) and it's sgetting spark.

I have a manual, so I can get all the speck, but am not sure what to look at first. I have had a lot of mechanical experience, but not with bikes.

Any suggestions?

Thanks mate

Jason

Answer
Hi Jason.
The only important difference between car engines and motorcycle engines, for all intents and purposes, is that one is used in a car and one is used in a motorcycle.  All mechanical principles apply the same to both.
Have you cleaned out the carbs, including the float bowls?
You could have junk in there which is cutting off fuel flow.
Also install an inline fuel filter or replace the one that's there if it has one already.

Check your fuel for water.  Drain the floats into a clean, dry mason jar and see if you have bubbles sitting on the bottom.  Those bubbles are water, which is heavier than fuel.  Also water is clear while fuel has a bit of a yellowish tint to it.

After all of that, check all of the fuses and go over the ignition system for shorts, arcing and bad connections.

Lastly, check your idle speed.  If it has been tampered with, then you may be trying to run the bike below idle, which, as you know, won't work.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
