Motorcycle Repair: 1988 XR 100, replacable, timing chain

Question
CHRIS, I AM WORKING ON THIS XR 100 AND HAVE FOUND THE TIMING CHAIN EXTREMELY LOOSE.  THE CHAIN AND GEARS DO NOT APPEAR WORN THAT BAD.  THERE SEEMS TO BE 2 TENSIONERS.  ONE IS ADJUSTABLE AND IS OK AND  THE OTHER IS A PLASTIC TYPE AND DOESN'T HAVE MUCH TENSION AT ALL. IS THIS ONE REPLACABLE? IF SO, HOW?  I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INFO ON THIS AND GETTING IT BACK IN TIME PROPERLY.   THANKS

Answer
Hi Kevin.
Any part can be replaced.  The particulars of which can vary from bike to bike.  What you need to do is get the repair manual.  It will have the specific proceedures for every repair that you will need to do as well as maintainence proceedures and specs.

Good luck.
