Motorcycle Repair: Harley Davidsons, harley davidsons, cam bearings

Question
Hi.  What were some of the popular exhuast pipes used on the 86 fxr back then?  Where are the oil filters located on those bikes?  If properly maintained, how many miles could be expected on the evolution and twin cam motors?

Thanks.

Answer
There were lots of aftermarket exhaust pipes used on tose bikes back then. Cycle Shack, Samson, MCM  and Harley just to name a few.
For that year harley placed the oil filter in several locations. One is in the front of the motor, another was behind the motor in front of the rear tire.
Properly maintained, on a EVo motor you should get 100,000 miles easy. There was a guy a few years that had a harley that had around 200,000 miles on it and no motor tear down. Keep in mind that bearings dont last forever and they can fail at anytime, which is usually what happens. I bought a new Dodge truck last year and a rod bearing went out at 1500 miles!
On the twin cam motors, its hard to say. They havent been around long enough to really see how long they will last. They had their problems right off the bat with the cam bearings.
Hope this helps
