Motorcycle Repair: Rz500 clutch skipping in first gear, worn clutch, clutch lever

Question
Hi Michael, I just rebuilt an 85 RZ500, Engine works great, handling is good, everything seems ok, but, it keeps skipping in first gear, seems like the clutch is skipping, but only in first gear when I'm accelerating.
It is like I'm pulling/releasing the clutch lever while accelerating.
It stays engaged in first gear, it does not fall between two gears...
There is no grinding sound when it skips...

Thanks for any advice!

Answer
Gino,
Great bike, only sold in Canada and elsewhere(not in the States)when they came out.  I'm assuming you're hearing constant engine acceleration through the "slipping" in 1st gear.  The only thing that comes to mind is that your cluch is indeed slipping and may either need to be adjusted for correct play or rebuilt.  I'm not sure if you did indeed install a new one upon rebuild.  1st is quite low and if you were to experience any slipping from a borderline worn clutch, 1st would be prime territory.

If I am seeming a bit elementery and you've exhausted these possibilities, write back and I'll give it another shot.

Mike
