Motorcycle Repair: Tachometer and rear cylinder dont work, honda shadow 750, service maintenance repair

Question
I have a 1983 Honda Shadow 750 (VT750), the tachometer doesn't work and the rear cylinder does not fire. The front cylinder is running and hot! but the rear cylinder exhaust pipe never even feels warm. What is the problem?

Answer
Hi Jim,

I suspect the tachometer cable is the cause of the problem. It could be broken, rusted or corroded, loose at either end, or some other problem with-in the tachometer.

The cylinder problem could also be a variety of things. It's not getting fuel or not getting spark or both. But why?

Describe the appearance of the spark plugs. Are they: Black and sooty? wet? dry? speckled like pepper?

Has cylinder compression and cylinder leak-down checks been performed?

Has the MC sat parked for awhile?

Last service, maintenance, repair, or modifications?

With the information given, I can only give the above intel.
