dear chris,
my brother has a yam.r6 year 00 model.8500km.he has a problem with gear selection.it goes into first, going into second although a clunk can be felt it does not engage.other times it does engage but may not engage for the next gear.sometimes gear select lever maybe floppy and will not engage 2,3,4,etc.if in 3or4 coming down the gears leaver operates normal.clutch lever and mechanism seems to operate ok.hope you have enough info.thanks sam.

Answer
Hi Sam.
Has the clutch been adjusted as tight as possible?  You could have a problem with that or it could be the clutch tension adjustment or, the worst possible thing, the shifter forks are damaged.  Check the first two and if they don't get it working right, then I suggest that you take it to a mechanic, because this may require major engine work.

I wish I had better news for you.
Good luck.
