Motorcycle Repair: cylinder walls too large, size rings, cylinder walls

Question
Hi Jhonney
my cylinders are too large, the mechanic at the shop told me to get oversize rings to take up the slack.  Standard piston he said to get .010" oversize rings.  I did and filed them to fit walls
but I am having trouble sliding piston into walls .
Are the rings butting togeather not letting them go into ring groves all the way.
I never heard of puting oversize rings on standard pistons to make them fit the walls.  Did you?  Its a 1977 H.D. Sportster 1000.  I know you said you were not much on Sportsters but maby you can awnser this
Thanks,  Bill

Answer
you CAN NOT use over size rings on cylinders that are too big for the pistons to take up the slack. you need a NEW mechanic NOW. the cylinders need to be bored to match the pistons. and the rings cut to fit the cylinders with proper end gap. I dont care what year or model the bike is. pistons are all the same on every motor. you mechanic need to be run out of town. SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY
