Motorcycle Repair: Honda Shadow 1100 ( SC18E ), check ebay, point gap

Question
Hello Bill Silver, The deal on the XL350E dirt bike included a really rough Shadow 1100. I haven't figured out if it is a standard or automatic transmission.  Seems to be only 2 positions on foot lever on left side / left handlebar is bare / no cable into left side of engine case / cranking elec starter turns rear tire in either position of lever.  Probably will need point gap info (1987) or if electronic ign module will need to locate it.   Spare 1100 eng. stuck / would end of crank under right side 2" slotted plate allow socket or big allen wrench, etc to turn crankshaft? shift lever on this eng doesn't affect driveshaft ( turns freely, so if engaged could maybe use it to unstick pistons) ideas, suggestions.  thanks

Answer
Honda hasn't had any automatics since the 1978 CB750A models.

I think the clutch cable goes into the left side cover areas somewhere. CDI ignition, so look for modules around the battery box area.

Go to the http://www.powersportspro.com/partsfish/login.asp
log in and then you can search the site for the microfiche illustrations that you need to locate stuff on the bike.

Cover on the end of crankshaft should reveal a bolt to turn motor over with. As long as you have a spare motor, you may as well tear it down to see what is damaged and what could be used for the other bike.

mnauals are available at www.helminc.com or aftermarket versions at www.motorcyclebooks.com or www.motorcyclememories.com

Check Ebay for related goodies, as well.
