Motorcycle Repair: racing, drive chains, endurance racing

Question
Maybe you will be able to answer this maybe not?
This was the closest category I could find.

The concept of using a belt instead of a chain origonally came from harley. I have seen it some other bikes nowadays, even some sportier high power bikes.

My question is why do they not use the belt drive on racing ama bikes? It is lighter and just as strong right?

well thanks anyway

Answer
Hi Will,

Belts are strong, but bulky, requiring additional space to accomodate sprockets or pulleys. This may mean added weight due to frame variations and engine/transmission case designs. So, not necessarily lighter.

Drive chains are more easily replaced when broken or worn (masterlinks). Replacing a belt means swingarm and wheel removal. Not practical for trackside repairs during endurance racing. It has been done, but chains seem to do better in race applications.

Drive shafts are not ideal for racing, either. But I like both belts and drive shafts on street MC's. Dependable, quiet, and long lasting.
