Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki Volusia Transmission, driven gears, 2002 suzuki volusia

Question
A high pitched noise coming from tranny. Dealer says it's gear lag. He don't want to mess with it, says it isn't a problem.I have been told to shim the gears. Can this be done, and how?
The Bike is a 2002 Suzuki Volusia 800cc
      Thanks

Answer
Hi Bob,

Helical cut gears, such as crankshaft drive/clutch basket driven gears, cause a high pitched whirling sound.

There may be a tech bulletin from Suzuki reference the noise. Have to inquire with your local Suzuki shop.

Sometimes manufacturers have recalls or warranty work that they do not notify Suzuki owners about. They wait until the owner complains about the symptoms before authorizing warranty repairs. This applies to recalls that are safety hazards.

Dealers usually welcome engine teardowns during winter months, and avoid them during tune up or warm season months.
