Motorcycle Repair: Starter spinning, air gap, evo motor

Question
I have an '88 softail with the Evo motor.  Had the bike a couple of years.  When I crank the starter it engages for a few seconds (often enought to start the bike), then spins.  Sometimes it just spins  Originally thinking the starter was not kicking out and engaging, I yakned the starter to find that it was not made to kick out (maybe they changed this in 89?).  At any rate, I had the starter rebuilt while it was off, installed a new battery and am still having the same problem.  She hasn't left me sitting (yet) but I am gearing up for Daytona and don't need any more problems than necessary!

Thanks for your help.  I am only 2 years into the HD scene and learning more every day about wrenching!

Answer
Hi Scott.
your clutch ring gear may be chewed up. also the air gap between the starter and clutch ring gear may be too much, also the starter actuation arm may be worn out. If it has flat spots on it then it must be replaced. JOHNNY
