Nissan Repair: 1990 nissan P/U z24

I have a 1990 Nissan 2wd p/u with the Z24 engine. All at once the motor started to crank over slowly and drag a bit before starting. I have changed the battery and the starter to no avail. New parts made no difference in the drag at start. I had the timing checked and it seems to be within spec. Any ideas, timing chain possibly? Any suggestions will be gladly taken. Thank you

Did this condition start recently?

I would get a ratchet and socket and turn the damper by hand, see if the engine turns without too much force. Could be binding up.

If not, could be a defective part. Perhaps take a battery load test and a starter amp draw test.
