Question
I HAVE A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA when I start car it has a spinning or grinding and a scraping noise like metal seems to be coming from where the belts or pulleys are  coming from front passenger side what could this be I had pulley tensioner changed and it still happens when I start car or when car is not moving and when I drive also when I drive for about 20 mins.  I can smell a faint something like rubber or oil..  Thanks

Answer
Hi Lynn -

I am assuming that you have a serpentine belt.

That being the case, I would check the alternator bearing, or it could even be the timing belt tensioner or idler.

What I do is get a long (3 foot) screwdriver and use it like a stethoscope and I touch various areas to listen for the sound.

Hope this helps -
