Nissan Repair: 1995 Nissan Maxima Misfire Cylinder 5, spark plug wire, nissan maxima

Question
I recently purchased a 1995 Maxima with 200k miles. It had a check engine light on when I purchased it and I don't know how long it has been present.

I performed the self diagnosis on the brain and it gave me code 0604 - Cylinder 5 Misfire. I have replaced all 6 spark plugs with NGK platinums as recommended by dealer. I reset the computer and the code came back about 100 miles later. I then replaced the one ignition coil on cylinder 5 and reset the computer again. The light came back on after about 50 miles.

This leads to me to believe that it may be a fuel injector. More information... I also smell fuel after I get out of the car from driving. There is also shaking while driving or idling with a load. I know the fuel injectors should test between 12-15 ohms. I was wondering how I can easily test the back fuel injectors without removing the intake manifold. Or any other advice on what this could be. Also it is always the same misfire code on cylinder 5. I have tried changing coils also to see if it moved to another cylinder and it stays at cylinder 5.

Answer
Hi Jeremy -

You have done an excellent diagnostic. I also suspect it is the #5 injector. If you can intercept the wires before it goes behind the intake, then you can check it that way. I usually treat it like a spark plug wire (disconnect the injector and see if the engine runs the same. If it does, bye bye injector). I usually feel the injector while the engine is running to see if it is clicking.

Unfortunately there is no shortcut, and looks like you will have to replace it anyway.

Hope this helps -
