can you tell me why a fuel gauge would not work in a 1992 pathfinder? wiring? something worse? can you describe how to fix it?

It could be the wiring but  the main cause it's a faulty sending unit inside the gas tank and it needs to be replaced. The sending unit is mounted on the pump/float assembly and it will be easier to remove and replace the whole assembly instead of just the sending unit. It is easily accessible from the top of the fuel tank.
