Nissan Repair: Nissan Sunny 2004 - OBD Query, nissan sunny 2004, obd ii

Question
Hi Bill:

Recently I bought a Nissan Sunny - Model 2004 (JDM and probably FB15) and was thinking of buying an OBD cable (or kit). But as I am not an expert on it, I am having some trouble in understanding whether my car uses OBD1 or OBD2. So, would you please help me answer the query?

Moreover, would you also recommend if ELM327 will work with my car or not? By the way, I do not have the owner's manual to check with my query.

Thanks for your help and time!

Regards,
Isaac

Answer
Hi there, in 1994, California emission regulations mandates that all vehicles sold there must have an OBD II  capability starting with the model year 1996. In 1996 OBD II was made mandatory for ALL vehicles sold in the United States. Since your vehicle is a 2004 model year it definitely has OBD II capability. Look for the 16 pin female diagnostic connector under the dash.
Any scanning tool interface that you can buy in about any automotive store it will work and you can purchase a basic one for about 80 dollars. I use OTC tools but that is my personal preference.
