Nissan Repair: TRIP ODOMETER/POWER ISSUE, vehicle speed sensor, trip odometer

Question
Bill,

I have a 2000 Maxima with 150K miles. For the past month, my trip odometer restarts everytime I turn off/on the car. Also my digital clock display is OFF. I checked the fuses and found that Socket 21 "starter signal" does not function. I went to autozone the other day to have my check engine light checked and found that there is also no power coming from my ODBII plug. The service guy suggested I check my cicargette fuses because they are connected to the OBDII PLUG.
Both my cigarette fuses are good.
Any suggestions...

Answer
The OBDII does not take power from cigarette lighter fuses, no association. In order to extract trouble codes now, the ECU must be turned to diagnostic mode III. If you are not familiar with that please take the car to a qualified technician. That will also help to determine if the cause of the odometer is a vehicle speed sensor problem. As for the clock, we will need to find out if there's any electrical power going to it. However, it's not unusual that a bad electronic instrument panel is the cause for the trip odometer and or the clock malfunction.
