Nissan Repair: Mysterious Nissan Altima Electrical Problem, nissan altima, retractable antenna

Question
Hello Mr. Iwashuta- I have a 1997 Nissan Altima, 4 cyl., 2.4L 246,400 miles.
I had parked the car the other night. When I tried to start the next morning..nothing. No cranking sound at all. I tried to charge the battery but it wouldn't charge fully. I had it tested and it was bad  so I replaced it. I have lights and everything else but it still won't start, still no cranking sound.
I'm not sure why the battery went bad, it's 2 years old and I didn't leave anything on. The alternator was replaced a year ago.
Another thing I noticed..both headlights now work when I just had one. My retractable antenna works too.
Any ideas for the no start? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Lisa -

This could be either the starter, or the ignition switch, in order of probability.

There are 2 wires that go to the starter, a large one (usually red) that has power (12V) all the time. The smaller one should have power only when the key is turned like when you are starting the car. If you have power there, then the starter needs replacing. If not, then the switch.

Of course, this is assuming that the battery and connections are all good.

A 12V test lamp probe type would be perfect for this diagnosis. if you are self checking this. Buy it at any auto parts store for a few dollars.

Hope this helps -
