Nissan Repair: 94 Altima wont start at times, neutral safety switch, battery connection

Question
I have a 94 Altima, at times when I go to start it doesn't turn over or even fires at all. I have to turn on the ignition switch and move the shift lever from park to reverse then back to park to start it. So far so good with this method until recently when it wouldn't start at all. I have replaced the neutral safety switch on the transmission and and replaced the starter. Still having same problem at times. Had the starter tested before I purchased it. Can you help please?

Answer
Hi WB

Best way to check this is to get a 12V test light with probe.

First, check power to the starter. Ground the probe and touch the tip to the large wire of the starter. Should have power. If no power then check the fusible link, or battery connection. Next check the solenoid wire power. This is the smaller wire connected to the starter. While the key is held in start position, there should be power to this terminal. If there is power, then the starter is defective. If no power, then check the ignition switch. Also check the neutral safety switch in this manner with the gears in P and N. There should be power coming out of the switch in these gears.

Hope this helps -
