Nissan Repair: 1993 pathfinder, transmission questions, rubber seal

Question
I know you said you dont answer transmission questions but it is pretty basic.......if I needed to replace the rear main seal ( engine - tranny contact point ) that required a complete take out of the tranny to replace a $10 rubber seal.....that leaked tranny fluid every time I drove the vehicle any kind of distance.....what would happen if I tried to drive the vehicle on a 725 mile ( 1200 km ) moving trip without doing this repair?

could I not keep refilling the tranny fluid every 100 km ?

Answer
Hi Peter -

Yes, the rear main seal is a bear, all labor for a $10 part. Usually the leak is not too bad and keeping the trans oil full would be the only thing you would have to worry about for the drive. In fact depending on the leak, you may not even have to fill it at all.

I have had some great success with a product called AT205. This reconditions and expands the rubber seals when you add it to the transmission oil, thereby eliminating the leak in some cases. Worth a try, especially for that drive. Carquest sells it here in Hawaii, I don;t know what you have there.

Hope this helps
