Nissan Repair: Infiniti QX4 Leak, infiniti qx4, drain tube

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2002 Infinit QX4, essentially a Pathfinder. There is moisture accumulating under the front passenger side floor mat.The underside of teh mat and the carpeted floor are quite wet. I do not think it is an outside leak or rain related since the water accumulates even when we havent had any rain for several days. I called the dealer and they said I would have to leave the truck for a few days and there would be a lot of diagnostic time. Any ideas? Could it be a clog or something in the heating/cooling system? Any insight you could give me would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Jeff,

There are two things it could be.  The first is a plugged evaporator case drain tube.  This is where the condensate drains when the air conditioner is on.  The second is the heater core leaking into the vehicle.  If the wetness smells sweet it is coolant and the heater core needs to be replaced.  If it is not it is the drain tube being blocked.

QUESTION: Thanks so much for the prompt reply! Could you advise the length of time it would take to repair either of these two problems? It does not smell sweet, it looks and feels like plain water. Also, just to clarify, the AC is not on now, just the heat would be on in NY at this time of year. Can I assume the evaporator case drain tube could still  be the problem even the AC is not on? THANKS SO MUCH1

Answer
Jeff,

The heater core would be a day job for the dealer or a shop.  It is involved but you could do it if you liked.  The drain tube is easy as it is just a matter pf pulling the carpet back and looking and also getting under the vehicle to clean out the drain.  Passenger side, towards the firewall and close to the transmission tunnel.
