Nissan Repair: 1995 Nissan Maxima Random Misfire Follow-up, valve cover gasket, nissan maxima

Question
Hi Von,

This is regarding the 1995 Nissan Maxima with random misfire problem. I wasn't allowed to ask another follow-up so had to post it as a new question. In you last answer, you had asked me to check my spark plugs and coils. Well, I changed my spark plugs and found that one spark plug and ignition coil was completely soaked with oil (the one on the back on passenger side). The mechanic said that this was due to faulty gaskets and asked me to replace the head valve gasket. He said it would cost around $250 including parts and labor. I wanted to know if the gaskets could be the only problem or there might be some other reason for the oil leaking into the spark plug and the coil? Also is $250 reasonable?
Thanks.

Answer
Mirza,

The valve cover gasket on the back head is a pain to get to and you have to take all kinds of stuff off to get access.  So, $250 is well within reason for this job for both parts and labor.  The o-ring has failed and oil is grounding out that plug and coil.  So, yes it is the problem and the cost is within reason.  Sorry for the inconvenience with the way this site works.  I just answer questions, for free.
