Nissan Repair: 1997 Altima rough idle, stalls when stopped, mass airflow sensor, volt ohm meter

Question
hi!  I'm getting sporadic rough idling.  It seems fine
sometimes, especially when the engine is cold.  Other times
it wants to cut out every time the car slows to a halt.
After driving on the freeway for ten minutes it will
inevitably stall on the (uphill) offramp if I have to stop.
I also noticed shifting is sometimes sluggish when I start
moving again... don't know if that's related.  For the first
time today the engine also felt rough on the freeway (a bit
scary).  There are NO trouble codes in the computer and the
check engine light only comes on when it stalls (naturally).
Where do I start?  I'm no a mechanic but I am armed with a
Haynes guide and willing to get my hands dirty with anything
that can be done or tested myself without great risk of
personal injury :).

Answer
Jason,

First check to see if there is fuel pressure.

Next,  If there is sufficient fuel pressure check the mass airflow sensor to see if it is defective.  There is a process using a volt ohm meter to verify proper function.

Another issue can be the coils overheating and cutting out.

Check these and email me back with what you find.
