Nissan Repair: Nissan Altima 2000, volt ohm meter, nissan altima

Question
Hello, my daughter's 2000 Altima has a flaky fuel gauge.  It jumps all over the place, sometimes full, sometimes half or less, even when the car is filled.  She has to use the odometer to figure out when to get gas.  My guess is that this is the fuel level sender.  Do you think this is correct?  If so, how do I change it?  Is it accessed by removing the back seat or through the trunk? Do you have any other suggestions?  Thanks very much for your time.  -Bill

Answer
Bill,

Either the fuel sender in the tank is defective or the gauge is going out.  You could check with a volt ohm meter on the harness at the dash.  But, you will need to remove the cluster to get to the harness.  Or, you will have to pull the fuel pump and sending unit from the tank.  Remove the rear seat and the access panel to get to the pump and sending unit.  If you do this you need to make sure you have a fire extinguisher and a friend to keep you safe.  Run it low on fuel before you attempt to access the pump and sending unit.
