Nissan Repair: 02 Nissan Pathfinder P0023

Question
QUESTION: I have identified this code with a Snap On Solus and would like some info on proper diagnosis of the suspected solenoid used to control the camshaft timing as well as the location of this unit. It is a v-6 engine and I believe is a bank 2 fault location. Any further help would be appreciated. Thank you.

ANSWER: Tim,

I would replace the camshaft position sensor first.  If you have the variable advance and retard solenoid going bad then it is just a simple bolt off and on.  Reset the codes and you are done.

QUESTION: The Solus indicated in the troubleshooter code tips the solenoid failure to be common with no mention of the sensor. I will test the sensor to be sure. Can you tell me where the solenoid is located? The sensor is obvious. I would like to get at the solenoid to test it first but need to locate it. Thanks again for your help and the timely response.

Answer
Tim,

If the solenoid is defective be sure to purchase the correct one.  There is no way to test them other than a replacement.  Basically, the cam for that head is not advancing since the solenoid is not allowing the oil to flow into the advance eccentric.  Checkout courtesyparts.com or rockauto.com or autopartswarehouse.com or your choice.  I surf around and find the best price.  Plut they deliver to your door.  I hate to go to a parts store and order a part and then have to go back and pick it up.  I can do that on the computer, at home...
