Nissan Repair: 2002 Maxima Heater/Ac fan not working, check voltage, auto parts store

Question
Hi Calvin,

I have a 02 Maxima and the fan stopped working and will not work on any speed.  I'm curious of where I should start.  Which should I replace first the relay, resistor or the fan itself? And is everything located behind the glove box?

Thank you for you time and help,
Bill

Answer
Hi Bill -

First of all get a 12V light tester probe type at any auto parts store (or if you have one, you may use a multi meter voltage tester)

Check the fuse if you haven't already. Use the test probe to check each terminal of the fuse. If one side lights the probe and the other doesn't, replace that fuse. Ensure you have the ignition on.

Ignition on, fan on, check voltage at the terminal going into the fan assembly behiond the glove box.

If there is power there, then the fan motor is not good and needs replacement.

If there is no power, check the resistor. It is either located on the firewall, or along the duct somewhere in the car. If there is power on one side, none on the other, the resistor needs replacement.

If there is power both sides, the fan switch is probably defective

Hope this helps -
