Nissan Repair: 2002 Nissan Altima inside review mirror, 2002 nissan altima, nissan altima

Question
I own a 2002 Nissan Altima and I also have a problem with my inside rear view mirror, it has fogged up and I would appreicate instructions on how to replace it or take it apart for cleaning.
There appears to be moisture inside the mirror, but I always keep my car inside my enclosed garage.  The total milage is about 40,000.
If I am unable to clean the mirror I plan to replace it with with a standard night/day mirror.  My existing mirror has a compass.
The cost for a new mirror from the local Nissan dealer is $191 which does not include installation.  I contacted the Nissan repair department and they said that they had never heard of such a problem.  I question that answer though.

Thank you,
Karl

Answer
Hi Karl -

Your assumption is accurate. What happened is moisture got between the layers of glass on your mirror and clouded up the plastic safety membrane inside. This happens a lot with this type of glass, so it is not uncommon. The mirror is very easy to replace. You would get the new one and fix it to the existing anchor (if it is attached to the windshield?).

Unfortunately it is not serviceable, so the entire mirror needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps -
