Nissan Repair: Overheating Xterra, fan clutch, driven fan

Question
Hi Calvin,

I'm trying to sort out an overheating 2004 Xterra. It's a rebuilt engine and the cooling system was just flushed and had leaking hoses replaced. After operating for an hour or so, temp starts to spike, but only when stopped or driving slowly. When driving at speed the temp drops back down to normal levels. It's operating just like when a rad fan isn't operational except of course the Xterra has a belt driven fan and it's working. It's been in to 2 shops and neither can find anything wrong.

Thanks,
-Cam

Answer
Hi Cam -

Usually when the vehicle runs hot only during idle, it is either the radiator tubes are clogged, or the fan clutch needs replacement. Although the radiator was flushed, there could be still blockage at the bottom, where the sediment settles. Open the drain petcock on the bottom of the radiator. If water comes out, then it should be OK, if not, might need to replace the radiator.

I would also go ahead and replace the fan clutch.

How is the thermostat, new?

Let me know -
