Nissan Repair: Replace speed sensor on Nissan xterra 2001, nissan xterra, speedo cable

Question
Have a Nissan xterra 2001. Speedometer is no longer working. Understand it is probably sensor. Would like to know, where I can find the location of the sensor and where I can get instructions on how to replace myself.

Answer
Hi Jeannine -

Before condemning the SS, check the speedo cable. Look for the cable housing that enters the transmission. You can ID it by finding the round hold down that you unscrew. Behind that is a plastic gear that sometimes gives out. If the gear is intact, check the cable itself. Unfortunately this has to be done from in the car, remove the instrument panel, and then the cable housing snaps in from behind the speedometer. Unsnap the housing, pull out the cable and inspect it, as it could be frayed or broken.

Usually if it is the Speed Sensor, the check engine light will turn on - is it on?

Hope this helps -
