Nissan Repair: Revolution sensor & vehcle speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor, courtesynissan

Question
Dear Von,

I have a similar problem on my 1995 Pathfinder SE. I like this vehicle. It's been very reliable. Recently my speedometer stopped working and when it does work, it freezes at whatever speed it last registered. When ignition shut off, speedometer returns to zero.
The tachometer behaves like the speedometer. The odometer doesn't work.
Tell me please, where are 1) the revolution sensor and 2)vehicle speed sensor located?
My mechanic thought it was the instrument cluster and replace it. Same problems. He replaced a black box about 4x4x1 with a connector hanging of it. Same problem. He turned off the Check Engine Light but as soon as the vehicle rolls, the light comes back. I'm thinking of staying away from him even though he tells me he specializes on 4x4s.
A phone call to a dealer quoted some $850 when I described the above. Since then I've been researching on the web for fixes.
I want to try myself. From what I read one of these sensors is at the top back of the AT housing but haven't figured out where the other one is. I'm told they aren't the same.

Thanks for sharing your expertise with us.

Tom.

Answer
Tom,

The vehicle speed sensor is on the transmission and if you purchase one you will know what you are looking at.  The driver's side of the transmission is the location.  rockauto.com or autopartswarehouse.com or courtesynissan.com are all good sources for the vehicle speed sensor.  The tach is probably the instrument cluster connection that needs to be cleaned and reinstalled.  If that is not the case the tach itself is probably defective.  Go to Autozone or Checker and get the code read for free and email me back with the code and we'll solve that one.
