Nissan Repair: 2000 Nissan Altima, nissan altima, battery cables

Question
While driving...lights flickered and car shut down. Had the car serviced and they said it was the distributor.  Had it replaced. Car drove well for a week and even a 5 hour trip.  Got to destination now car won't start.  Will not even take a jump.  Could it be the alternator or starter?

Answer
Hi Angelina -

I would suspect it is the battery or battery connection. Please tell me what you hear (if anything) when the key is turned. Meanwhile, try these tests:

1. Check all battery terminal connections for tightness and corrosion. This requires that each terminal be removed and cleaned (sanded) so there is a positive connection. This includes checking all connection related to the battery cables.

2. Try to start the car. If you have no red lights on the ignition panel, then it is either the ignition switch, or the battery (go to step 3 to check the battery). If you have red lights, but no sound, or red lights and clicking noises, then go to step 3.

3. Turn the headlights on and try to start the car. If the lights go very dim, or shut off while the key is turned, then it is the battery. If you hear a clicking sound but the lights remain strong, then it is the starter assembly.

Hope this helps -
Aloha
