Nissan Repair: overdrive sensor, torque converter, auto transmission

Question
Lately on my 1995 Maxima the overdrive light is staying on and not shifting into 4th until vehicle is at operating temp or been driving for awhile. I have been told that the overdrive is controlled by the engine temp. Can the snsor be replaced and where is it located,  and or do I need to look into something else?

Answer
the transmission itself has nothing to do with engine temp.  what you may have a problem with is the transmission or the auto tranny ECU.   i cant answer you on the sensor question because i don't know how the maxima auto transmission is setup.    i do have another experience where the transmission wouldn't shift until the car ran for a few minutes (another model#, and that completely stumped me...luckily it wasn't my responsibility to fix!   im just giving you some ideas but i would suggest find a RELIABLE mechanic to diagnose your car.  i would avoid the dealership, and the shadetree garage and find something in between that specializes in transmission repair.  best of luck to you and happy holidays.

edit:

i was thinking before i posted this, it could also be low on fluid.   the torque converter needs a specific amount of fluid to properly engage gears, this may also be your issue.  it may be related to how long your engine is running #temp) because its taking that long for the fluid to lubricate the overdrive gear.  ill put my money on that theory.   let me know how this turns out for you.  xxp_sebby@yahoo.com
