Nissan Repair: Evap code 440, vacuum lines, vacuum pump

Question
QUESTION: Hello Again Von,
After trying to reseal my Evap canister(from previous letter)I got the 440 code again.  My next move is to test the system.  Can you tell me where the service port is on my car(2001 Sentra SE)I'm going to buy a Vacuum Pump and put the system under pressure and test it with soapy water.  Any pointer that you have will be most helpful.  I assume that any standard pump will do the trick?  Also, I assume that to test the system I need to create pressure as oppose to creating suction on the system(never used a vacuum pump before so I'm a bit clueless as to everything it does-hope it can create positive pressure instead of negative pressure.  Anyway, please fill my head with everything you think I should know about this test.  I love doing things for myself so I haven't given up on this task yet.  Thanks again for all of your help!!!

Tim

ANSWER: Tim,

You will have a difficult time finding the leak this way.  I would just replace the vacuum lines from the canister to the system and all the clamps.  I know it sucks but Nissan had a problem with their suppliers and the result was some defective hoses.  I would spend the money on the hoses and clamps and be done with the problem.  Now, if you had a smoke generator you might find the leak and just replace that part.

QUESTION: I agree, your method is cheaper and less time consuming.  Okay, so I saw all of the vac lines near the canister, are they under the hood as well(I don't want to miss any)?  Also, I assume that any autoparts store should carry the lines?

Thanks,
Tim

Answer
Tim,

There are those at the back and then there is one at the engine where the vapors get sucked into the intake.  The lines are metric so most parts stores will try and sell you standard ones.  Pull yours and take them to the parts store and get them matched up.  Now, if you buy stuff on-line go to courtesyparts.com get on the phone with them and explain what you need and that you are pulling the 440 code and you need their help in getting the correct lines because you love your Nissan and you are tired of this stuff.  They will sell you every hose and clamp to replace and once the come in the mail just pull and replace one at a time and you are done...
