Nissan Repair: Nissan Sentra 1.6GX gearbox, nissan sentra, haynes manual

Question
QUESTION: Is there a step by step guide to repair a gearbox yourself? Want to just put my gearbox back together again, after a "mechanic" said he could fix mine, but gave it back in pieces. Just wanted the "broken" gearbox to be put over into another box that I bought. Now I have 2 "open" boxes and want to repair the one. Is this possible?

ANSWER: Jonathan,

A Haynes Manual or a factory service manual is the best bet.  If you have not done a manual transmission I would seek help.  One clip, shim or spacer out of place and you will end up taking it out again.  And, I hate to work on one that has been disassembled and left in pieces.  It makes it difficult to get it back together correctly.  Also, you will need some special tools to get the gears on some of the shafts as they require a press.  And, you will need dial indicators and feeler gauges to get the tolerances correct.  It is possible to make one good one out of two bad ones if you have enough good parts.

QUESTION: Hi Von Sudderth, thank you for your detailed response, really appreciate it. Tell me can I get this "Haynes manual" somewhere, as I believe that I can handle this type of exercise. Just need to be "guided" with the process. Had a look at the parts and believe that I should have at least one good one of the two. The gears and shafts are all intact and just need to be placed back into the casing. Will this manual show me how to handle it.

Answer
Jonathan,

A Haynes Manual or a Chilton or a factory service manual should do the trick.  If you cannot source one at the parts store go to the library and see if you can copy the pages you need to do the job.  A diagram is most helpful to see where things go.
