Question
I have a 2004 Altima and within the last couple of weeks I've noticed a burning rubber smell coming from our car time to time. It usually happen in the morning and seems to disapate as you drive. We took it to the mechanic that we trust and who has done right by us and him and two other drove the car and didn't smell anything. The first occurence happen a couple weeks ago and had one or two time since then that had a faint smell, but today we got the same potent smell when my wife started the car it seems to becoming from the air vents. We also just had an oil change and car wash and the attendants also noticed the smell. Please help I don't no what to look for or if this is a serious problem I checked the fluids and they seem fine and the belt seems to be working.

Answer
Justin,

Burnt rubber smell usually means the belts need to be tightened or replaced.  Also, if a hose or connector has come into contact with the exhaust that would cause the smell.  And, lastly, if the valve covers are leaking the oil could burn on the manifold smelling like rubber.
