it runs good on idel and on the street its just hard to start.  sometimes it runs down the batt from trying  to much

Hi Steven

Have you tuned your engine up lately?

Spark plugs, Esp. cap and rotor, ignition cables?

Could be you have some carbon tracking going on in your distributor cap.

Otherwise you can check the cold start valve. If you prime the intake throat with gas or starting fluid and the engine starts up right away, then I would replace the cold start valve, located on the intake boot.
