i have a 1992 Nissan sentra gxe 1.6 L twin cam with a/c.
its an automatic.
when im idling the engine shakes or chugs. when reversing it seems to get worse or even shuts off. when im actually driving it seems to run fine. i've changed the spark plug and it still seems to do it. any help would be great

I am assuming that the idle speed is at it proper adjustment?

First of all, check your motor mounts if it is worn or broken, and touching the frame of the car.

Next check your vacuum lines for leaking or breaks. This would also cause the above condition. Since there are many of these vacuum lines, a good way to test is to get some carburetor cleaner, and with the engine idling, spray a little mist over each part of the engine. If the engine idle improves, you have found the area of concern.
