Nissan Repair: 2003 crank position sensor location, 2003 nissan altima, volt ohm meter

Question
I have a 2003 nissan altima with the 4cyl.eng could anyone tell me where crank pos. sensor is located? im having a problem with the car stalling every now and then and it usually starts right up. and i've been told that there was a recall on this sensor but being second owner of the car i was never notified by nissan about it. could this be the problem with car stalling?

Answer
John,

The distributor is the sensor as it has an optical pickup and shutter wheel.  I would first check for engine codes providing the check engine light is on.  If not, do a tuneup by replacing the plugs, cap, rotor and air filter.  Email me back and let me know what is going on.  On an altima usually the mass airflow sensor screws up and the car will not idle.  No code will be set and it usually runs car shop guys nuts since they just want to check for codes and let the computer do the work for them.  If you get a Haynes Manual and a digital volt ohm meter, about $20 bucks for each, you can diagnose the mass airflow sensor yourself.  If it reads out of tolerance replace it.  Email me back and let me know what you find.
