Nissan Repair: 96 Maxima tranny, transmission shop, cottman

Question
My automatic won't shift up until I hit 30 and 50.
Is this just a fluid problem, and what fluid can I use without having to go to a dealership?

Answer
Mack,

A 1996 is too old to go to the dealership.  They will just source a shop or a transmission from an approved independent, in most cases.  It is over ten years old.  Anyway, sounds like the governor is sticking.  That is the part that tells the transmission to shift.  If a fluid change does not do the trick you are probably looking at a rebuild since they will have to drop the transmission anyway.  That is, if they are going to tear into it to fix the governor and you are paying all that labor you might as well get the rest of the parts refreshed.  New seals, clutches and bands.  Cottman has done a good job for me in the past.  But, check around your local area for a good transmission shop.
