Nissan Repair: a/c compressor, nissan altima, clutch plate


Question
I would like to replace the a/c clutch bearing on a 1997 Nissan Altima which is very noisy. Are special tools needed? Can you provide the procedure?

If it is just the clutch it is a matter of removing the center bolt, engine off and clutch locked; or you get the tool to hold the clutch plate while you remove the bolt.  Now, pull the center plate off taking care not to misplace washers that fall out from behind.  These are used to set the clutch air gap clearance.  You need snap ring plyers to get the electromagnetic and bearing off next.  Remove the snap ring and the assembly will come off.  UNplug the connection and disconnect the strain relief bolt and then install the new one using the specified gap provided in the literature.
