Nissan Repair: 91 nissan stanza stopped running while driving, nissan stanza, spark plug wire

Question
Thank you for you help.driving around 70mph on the intersrtate with cuise control, the check engine light popped on and the engine cut off. Costed to a stop, tried to start it back up. It will only turn over, like no gas. Looking under the hood, i noticed a black cylinder with two little hose that had come loose. one hose has a round piece, a filter maybe. of course putting them back on didnt work. they are tearing. Is this a fuel filter? And if I change these hoses out, could that fix my problem that easily? Its on the interstate and tow will be outragous.

Answer
Hi Ty -

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is without being there to diagnose, however let me throw some things at you:

Timing belt. If you car has high mileage and you never replaced the timing belt, this could be it. Open the distributor cap and crank the engine briefly. If the rotor is not spinning, the n the timing belt needs to be replaced. Needs to be towed to a reputable mechanic.

Module. If the timing belt is intact, check the spark for the engine. Remove a spark plug wire, insert a screwdriver in the boot til it wedges against the terminal inside. Hold it 1/4" away from any metal surface of the engine while a helper cranks the car (do not touch any metal surface while doing this). If there is a spark jumping between the gap, then the problem has to be fuel related.

I do not think it is those hoses that caused the car to stall, but it should be replaced anyway.

Hope this helps -
