Nissan Repair: 97 Nissan motor stalls, fuel pressure gauge, nissan motor

Question
My 97 Nissan 4 cylinder truck bucks and jumps at 2500 rpm's below that it runs fine.Any ideas?

Answer
Doug,

It could be a number of things.  If the fuel filter is plugging or the distributor is contaminated with oil that could make the truck buck.  Also, if the converter is melted partially the exhaust could be restricted.  For me, the first thing to check is the distributor since it costs no money to take the cap, rotor, rotor post and cover off to check for oil on the optical shutter wheel.  On your truck it is easy to inspect.  If there is no oil go to the fuel pressure check.  Usually, you can rent a fuel pressure gauge to check the pressure.  If the pressure is too low replace the fuel filter.  Now, to check the pressure you will need to step on the gas, at idle to get the rpms up to determine of the pressure drops off when demand is high.  The pressure should actually increase a little.  The converter is another matter since you will need to check for excess back pressure.  A pressure gauge in the oxygen sensor port can tell if the pressure is too high.  3 psi would mean the converter is plugging.  Email me back if you need more...
