Nissan Repair: 1995 Nisan-Shift Stuck in Park, nissan altima, safety interlock

Question
95 Nissan Altima, the shifter is stuck in park.  I can push in the button on the side of the shifter but it does not want to move out of park.  If I continue working with it I have been able to get it out.  When it is out of park it runs and shifts fine.

Answer
Rick,

There is a safety interlock that keeps the car locked in park unless the car is started and the brake pedal is pressed.  That being said, you either have a bad switch on the brake pedal arm or the solenoid that releases the shifter is broken.  To get the car out of part, in the mean time, you can remove the little plug on the shifter console and insert a ling straight tool to press in the button.  For safety replace the part at the soonest convenience.  If you wanted to bypass the shift interlock you would disassemble the shifter to get to the solenoid and lock it out of the way.  But, remember, if you do this the car can be shifted running or not and that is not safe.
