Nissan Repair: Red blinking light on 2001 nissan sentra, nissan sentra, perspective buyer

Question
There is a red blinking light to the left of my steering wheel.  There is no indication of what it might be for and it seems random when it flashes.  I usually see it at night, but that might just be because its easier to see.  I did notice tonight that when i tapped the accelerator (its a manual) it flashed more.  I thought it might be something to do with the brakes but when i tapped those, there was no noticeable correlation.  I did not even notice the light was there to begin with until it started blinking one day.  Any help or advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Answer
Andrew,

Sounds like an aftermarket alarm system that was installed on your car.  The red LED is to scare off people that might break into the vehicle.  Look under the driver's side of the dash and you should be able to follow the wire to the main unit.  The car comes with a factory installed unit.  Most of the time, these aftermarket alarms are installed by the dealer to get a reduced rate on their lot insurance and to charge the perspective buyer more money when they purchase the vehicle.
