Why does the parking brake light stays on, even after we have stepped on the brake? Is there a way to fix it ourselves?

The brake light is used for both showing the parking brake is left on and to show a problem with the brake system.  I would check the fluid and performance of the brakes and the pin switch on the parking brake.  If the pin switch is not depressed the light will stay on.  If the brake system has an imbalance in pressure it will throw the light on too.  You should have the brakes bled if they have not been bled in the last two years.  That will usually correct an imbalance condition if the master cylinder is still good.
