Nissan Repair: Altima Nissan Battery Problem, 2007 nissan altima, nissan altima

Question
QUESTION: 2007 Nissan Altima 30,000 miles. Battery died and had replaced, die again 3 day later, had cables cleaned and OK for 3 weeks. Noticed more acid and dried substance around positive battery cable and hoses. How do you determine if actual cable needs replacing? Does a diagnostic test show anything? No ck engine lights come on.

ANSWER: Hi Mary -

I would replace the positive battery cable, It seems that some acid may have penetrated the casing.

Diagnostic test would not show battery condition. You would have to get the battery checked by a special meter. Take a voltage test and a load test.

Is the car starting OK now?

QUESTION: Calvin,

Will have to have it jumped started to get it anywhere to have checked. Does not have enough juice to get started.  I failed to mention that the only thing I use is the recirculating air, radio and windows. No A/C at all. When taken after the first 3 day failure nothing showed up on the diagnostic test at all, and a load test was done and all came back OK. The only thing found was the battery acid buildup. I assume the load test includes multiple items such as the altenator, etc? Does a diagnostic test mean on the entire car or just certain parts based on the problem? Thanks

Answer
Hi Mary -

If the vehicle jump starts successfully, it has to be the battery, or could be the connections. If you have an other means of transportation, remove the battery and have it charged, and checked again. Same time replace the positive cable.

The diagnostic test is more of a "pulse" check of driveability problems, such as various sensors that monitor the operation of the engine once it starts.
