Nissan Repair: nissan primera s auto, timing chains, nissan primera

Question
re; nissan primera s auto....i have a noisy engine. ive been told by a mechanic that it is the timing chain and it needs replacing, without him even opening up the bonnet to have a look. ive also been told by another mechanic over the phone that timing chains rarly need replacing but that it may be possible to adjust the chain. can you please advise me what to do as replacing a timing chain on a nissan is apparently going to cost me £550. please advise

Answer
Akenn,

You did not mention the year or the miles?  Anyway, if the chain is making noise replace it before it breaks.  Otherwise it will be a new engine.  I would get a second opinion to make sure.  The price is about right for labor and materials.  I would also make sure the cost included coolant, oil and a filter.
