what would cause my nissan gas needle not to move to show how much gas is in the tank

Hi kay -

Looks like your sending unit has gone bad. I did not get the year and model of you car, but normally the sending unit, fuel pump, strainer, and float is located in the fuel tank. While the fuel tank is removed, it is a good idea to replace all these components.
